The Benefits of Water

 In re-reading the message about the Laws of Health, (Page 302-304 in the book, The Latter Rain)  I have been going back through some of my books regarding health and natural health remedies. I want to share with you just some of the things that I have learned.

The third point in the message about the Laws of Heath was "Drink Water. Here are some things I learned about the importance of drinking water.

Water is the solvent in our bodies, and as such, it regulates all the functions of our bodies, including the action of all the solids dissolved in the water. Every function of the body is monitored and pegged to the efficient flow of water. Here just a few of them. The movement of the blood, the transport of nutrients into our cells, the movement of waste out of our cells, the flow of lymph fluid, the movement of nerve impulses through our nerves, the movement of hormones throughout our bodies, the functioning of our brains. When we become dehydrated, all of these functions and many more are impaired. That is what has happened to most of us. As we become increasingly dehydrated, our thirst mechanism gradually fails, which leads to even more dehydration. Some of the symptoms of chronic dehydration include allergies, asthma, chronic pains, constipation, acidosis, dry skin, and shrinking of the internal organs and thinning of skin associated with aging. So, what are some of the ways our bodies manifest water shortage.  There are four categories of conditions. 1) perceptive feelings, 2) drought-management programs, 3) crisis calls, 4) complication of persistent dehydration.

 Under Perceptive feelings:  tiredness that is not the result of strenuous effort, like feeling tired when you first get out of bed in the morning, anxiety, agitation, shortness of temper, depression, sleep disorders, cravings for sodas, alcohol and even hard drugs and agoraphobia.  These are ways our brain reflects its water conservation and water-regulation problems.

 Drought and resource management programs are: constipation, allergies, asthma, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and autoimmune diseases.

 Crisis Calls: Newly understood regional thirst signals are - heartburn, rheumatoid joint pain, back pain, migraine headache, colitis pain, fibromyalgic pains, anginal pain.

Complications of dehydration are very extensive and include: obesity, hemorrhoids, cholesterol plaques and arterial diseases, type 1 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, neuritis, phlebitis, lymphomas, cancers, and many more. 

So, the question is how much water does the body need to just maintain it's supply?  Most doctors tell their patients to drink a minimum of eight 8 ounce glasses of water each day;  That is two quarts. How many of us do that? I know from experience that if you don't measure it, you don't know how much you are really drinking. This is 64 ounces, which is what a person weighing about 128 pounds would need.  One rule of thumb to use is to take half of your body weight and that would be the number of ounces per day you would need.  If a person weighed 150 pounds they would need 75 ounces per day just for maintenance. If a person is out in the hot sun, working hard physical labor, they need more.  Another, book mentioned one ounce per pound of weight.

How does one get that much water down? If you drink two 8 ounce glasses first thing when you get up, and another two between 10 and noon, two between noon and 4 and two more before 7 pm, you will have your eight glasses each day. Yes, you will go to the bathroom more, but that is good. Don't worry your body will adjust in time.

 Does juice, soda, ice tea, coffee, etc. count?  I think of it this way, would you put those things in your car radiator and expect it to do the cooling job of the engine?  Would you put the dirty oil in your car when it needs a change? Interestingly, it takes  ten cans of water to neutralize the acid for one can of soda a person drinks.

Considering this, if a person drinks a can of soda, they really should drink ten more cans of water in addition to their eight plus cups of water. We have choices to make, we need to take responsibility for the care of our temples, and as directed DRINK WATER.
